One of the most anticipated movies of Summer 2013 is the science fiction film, Pacific Rim. The Guillermo del Toro film stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi and Rob Pearlman alongside other B-list movie stars. Aside from outstanding acting by these stars that fit perfectly into the overall plot of the film, the movie is also action packed and full of special effects that utilize the 3-D experience to the fullest.
Pacific Rim pits a hoard of sea creatures known as Kaiju against an army of robots that hope to protect the earth from its impending doom. Del Toro is no stranger to this genre and any fans of his other sci-fi films will be sure to enjoy this one as well. Charlie Hunnam and Rob Pearlman are familiar working together, as they do on the FX series Sons of Anarchy, and they pair up just as well in the new blockbuster film. What may be best for the two actors is it demonstrates how well they can do in a genre that isn’t about motorcycle gangs in California. For Idris Elba and Rinko Kikuchi, it represents their first summer blockbuster hit, in which they prove they are ready for the big stage.
If you are a fan of 3D movies, you’ll be sure to enjoy Pacific Rim. It is nonstop action and has a feverish pace. Admittedly, some do not enjoy 3D films as much, but Pacific Rim is still worth checking out in regular theaters as well. The action and special effects alone are worth seeing and the acting adds to the enjoyment of the film.
The other great benefit that Pacific Rim offers is that it is rated PG-13. It doesn’t have any heavy intimate scenes and the language is moderate (I’ve heard worse come out of Pearlman and Hunnam’s mouths on their TV series). This makes it a perfect movie for the family during summer vacation from school.
Overall, Pacific Rim boasts enough credentials from a rising cast of stars and a seasoned veteran direct. The plot of the movie is only second in entertainment to the special effects that take place. It is a great movie to see and should definitely be on your summer-2013 watch list.
