Drunk History airs Tuesdays at 10/9C on Comedy Central, available through Comcast Cable!
After six years as a web series, Drunk History debuted as a half-hour sketch comedy on Comedy Central this summer. The show airs on Tuesdays at 10pm ET. The premise is simple: a drunk person recounts a historical moment–complete with slurred words, projectile vomit, and strange detours–as celebrities act out the roles, portraying the historical figures exactly as the drunk narrator describes them, lip sinking the storytellers’ words, and performing the described actions exactly. During the series premiere, the narrator recounts the Watergate scandal, and when Bob Woodward meets Deep Throat, Woodward pukes at Deep Throat’s feet.
Drunk History has delighted audiences as a web series for roughly six years in part because the show strives to be entertaining and informative. Derek Waters, the co-creator and host, says the events they portray in the show are “100% true, but some of the details are not articulated correctly.” In other words, Bob Woodward never vomited at Deep Throat’s feet, but their meeting really happened. To create an authentic show, the narrators are actually drunk, (there’s even a medic on the set with an oxygen tank) and the stories are real. Derek Waters aims for the show to teach audiences about history while making them laugh at the ridiculousness. He says his goal is for the audiences to Google the stories portrayed on the show and see just how true they are.
The celebrities who portray the historical figures include Jack Black, Dave Grohl, Fred Willard, Adam Scott, Jack McBrayer and Bob Odenkirk, and that’s all in the first episode alone which tackles the Watergate scandal and the Lincoln assassination. The show is perfect for anyone who has an appreciation for American history, but it’s also perfect for those who want to laugh really hard while learning something more about their country.
